The chapel in honour of Saint Liborius, the Bishop of LeMans, stands high above the Sûre Valley and is reached by a steep, multi-level path leading up from Echternacherbrück. A chapel on this site was first mentioned in written documents in 1680. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new chapel was built on the same site and destroyed at the end of the Second World War. The third chapel, which still stands today, was built in 1951.

A magnificent view

From the platform in front of the chapel, you have a marvellous view of Echternach, the oldest town in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with the famous Willibrord Basilica and the former abbey. Just a few steps away from the chapel, stone steps lead down to a hermitage carved into the rock, which has always been part of the chapel. From the end of the 16th century, hermit monks from the Echternach monastery inhabited this place.

Note: There is easy access to the Liborius Chapel from the Ernzer Hof in Ernzen. It is only a few hundred metres from the car park to the chapel on the edge of the plateau. The area around the Liborius Chapel has now been converted into a barrier-free viewing point as part of a German-Luxembourgish project.
